Experiences while under general anesthesia? |

I may be going through a procedure where I have the option of local or general anesthesia and for some reason I am afraid of completely going under because
I'll "see" things or "dream" things I don't want to see. Sometimes at night i see black and white scenes when i close my eyes at
bed time. It always scares me because I don't want to see these things (never seen anything frightening, though)
Has anyone actually experience anything like this while having surgery or anything? |

In a word, No! Seriously, I had a Colonoscopy done last spring. I had an i.v. in my wrist and a mask of some sort. I looked up at the lights, like in an OR. I
looked up again and said to the Nurse, "Are we about ready to go?" She said," You're done." I looked, yep different room. Didn't
see a thing.

That actually makes me feel a lot better. That's the answer I was hoping for.

unbranded, you have nothing to worry about. I've had surgeries where I've been completely under and you won't experience anything. After the
procedure and much further down the road you may have one or two bad dreams caused by subconcious recollection of the procedure but it is nothing to be afraid
of. I had the same fears you had and when the surgery was over I came out of it and was perfectly fine and went on about my life without a care in the world.

As the others stated it's not common to see or dream while under. However, when I was younger my event was totally different. The anesthesia given to me
was too much, I was lost for a short time. Thanks to the paddles I was revived. During that time of supposedly "dead" I did see various things, from
lights to my past. Although brief, it was enlightening. Keep in mind, you have nothing to fear, it's rare now a days to be given too much or little
anesthesia, times have changed and monitoring is more precise.

as titanic said having not enough or to much could cause something but I was given to much and after being brought back I slipped back into acoma but woke up
about a half hour to an hour later than expected and I didn't experience anything. I wouldn't worry at all it's highly unlikely anything will
happen.

Welcome to Shadowlands.. Actually, I have had severeal surgies from 5 heart catherizations, Open Heart Surgey in 1971, several skin graphs surgery from loss of right ring finger.. I know from all these surgies and others over the years, I had only one time where the amount of the anesthesia they gave was too much too but my side afeect was when I awoke I got very sick from the anesthesia which does happened and this happened back in late 1970's and back then this was normal practice.. Now the has been so much improvement on the anesthesia front that most doctors if not all doctors have medical insurance and they do not any thing happening either.. The black and white images you see prior to sleeping are possible waking dreams or maybe visual images as psychic flashes of thoughts.. Nothing dangerous here.. I think you will be ok and good luck on the surgery.. I just had an MRI on my pituatary gland and I was awake through all of it and did not need to be sedated and given ear plugs for the intense noise with the MRI... The entire procedure was about an hour or so and I was given an injection too for the MRI.. Try going for an MRI on your brain and not move!!! It was not fun but it was not painful too... |

I was completely under and then some during a 9 hour surgery at the are of 13. My heart stopped during the operation and I did see things. It was the most
beautiful experience I have ever had or will have. I imagine it had a lot more to do with nearly dying than the drugs I was given though
